England’s Euro 2020 squad looks incredibly strong this year, with some experienced veterans and bright young stars making up the 26-strong team. Maybe this year it really is coming home?

With raw talent comes excellent weekly salaries, and some of England’s star players are earning astronomical amounts of money. As a result, competition is rife amongst clubs, and wages have remained a key attractor for players for decades.

As well as footballer’s wages and transfer fees rising quickly, house prices in the UK have also been rocketing skywards. From the last year to April, house prices have increased by 8.9%, which was the fastest rise in years.

According to Statista, the average UK house price has risen to £256,405. But just how quickly can England’s national team pay off your mortgage?

Muve, one of the UK’s leading conveyancers, has tackled the numbers as if these footballers worked the same 9-5, five days a week as the rest of us, and here they are:

Goalkeepers:

  • Jordan Pickford
  • Aaron Ramsdale
  • Sam Johnstone

Englands strong lineup of goal stoppers is among some of the slowest earners in the team. Recently relegated Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion both see their #1’s make the England lineup, with Sam Johnstone being the lowest earner in the squad.

Defenders:

  • Reece James
  • Luke Shaw
  • Kyle Walker
  • Ben Chilwell
  • Tyrone Mings
  • Kieran Trippier
  • John Stones
  • Harry Maguire
  • Conor Coady
  • Ben White

England’s defence was touted as their biggest weakness going into Euro 2020, but also contains the country’s most expensive defender, Harry Maguire.

The Manchester United man moved to Old Trafford for an eye-watering £80 million. He earns £38,000 a day and can afford to buy the average UK home after just 6.75 days of work.

Midfielders:

  • Declan Rice
  • Jordan Henderson
  • Jude Bellingham
  • Kalvin Phillips
  • Mason Mount

The English midfield provides a fantastic mix of veteran international players and new talent that will form the linchpin of future squads.

Central star Kalvin Phillips of Leeds United has yet to see his salary catch up with many of his playmaking counterparts, earning £7,000 a day in a 40 hour week. In contrast, Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson earns four times as much, a whopping £28,000 a day.

Forwards:

  • Bukayo Saka
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin
  • Jadon Sancho
  • Raheem Sterling
  • Phil Foden
  • Marcus Rashford
  • Jack Grealish
  • Harry Kane

The attacking threat the England team possess in the Euro 2020 tournament is fierce.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Manchester United Star Marcus Rashford are two of the Premier League’s most ferocious attacking players, and England fans will hope to see them hit the back of the net plenty of times over the course of the European Championship.

England’s forwards are also amongst the most handsomely paid in the squad, with Kane tying with Raheem Sterling for the best-paid players in the England team.

Who earns the fastest?

It should come as no surprise that England’s most in-demand striker, Harry Kane, is the highest earner in the England team, tied with Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling. Both marksmen can afford the pay off the average UK home in just 6.41 days of work.

By comparison, West Bromwich Albion’s Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is the slowest, earning enough money to buy the average UK house in 45.79 days.

England manager Gareth Southgate is one of the FA’s highest-paid employees, earning £3,000,000 a year, or £11,538 per day. So he can afford to buy the average UK house in just 22.22 days of work.
